Adele, James Bay and Years & Years lead the running for this year’s BRITs, earning four nominations each. Holly Rubenstein reports.

2016’s BRIT Awards nominations announced

Adele, James Bay and Years & Years lead the running for this year’s BRIT Awards nominations, with four nods each.

Having stormed the charts worldwide with her album ’25’, Adele is up for British Female Solo Artist, British Video of the Year, British Single, and British Album of the Year.

New on the scene last year, singer-songwriter James Bay was 2015’s Critics Choice.

This year he finds himself nominated for British Male Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, British Album of the Year and British Single.

Electronic trio Years & Years, also new artists, winning the BBC’s Sound of 2015 poll last year, are nominated for British Group, British Breakthrough, British Single and British Artist Video for the Year.

SOUNDBITE Singer Olly Alexander from Years & Years, saying (English) :

“I’m just amazed, yeah. I don’t know what to say.”

Reporter: “You seem really shell-shocked.”

“Yeah. I don’t know. It’s such a big deal, growing up in the UK, always watching the BRITs so… We might never come again so we best make the most of it.”

Following in the footsteps of Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, and Adele, this year’s Critic’s Choice winner is 24-year-old Jack Garratt.

SOUNDBITE Singer Jack Garratt, saying (English) :

“Overwhelmed, and unsure, and excited, and terrified and every other emotion that I can possibly be feeling right now.”

Garratt is the first of this year’s winners. The rest of the nominees will have to wait until February 24 when the BRIT Awards will be held in London.
