A look back at the devastating BP oil spill

This kickstarted one of the most devastating environmental disasters ever to hit U.S. shores.

On April 20, 2010 an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 workers.

And it spewed 200 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean for almost three months.

These are just some of the animals it affected.

Crews worked around the clock to clean-up hundreds of miles of coastline… as BP worked to seal the ruptured wellhead.

CEO Tony Hayward came under fire for remarking that “he wanted his life back” after the spill… but apologized before Congress in June.

“The explosion and fire aboard the Deepwater Horizon and the resulting oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico never should have happened and I am deeply sorry that it did.”

Shortly after this appearance, a new CEO took over.

And in November, 2012, BP pleaded guilty to 11 counts of manslaughter, two misdemeanors and one felony count for lying to Congress.
