A possible sign of alien life?

A possible sign of alien life?

News that a Russian radio telescope may have detected an extra-terrestrial signal from outer space has science-fiction fans buzzing, but at least some scientists saying ‘not so fast.’

Last year Russia’s Academy of Science reportedly picked up a signal originating from a star in the Hercules Constellation roughly 95 light years away.

The Russians apparently stayed quiet about it until finally sharing the news with scientists at Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, an international institute.

The reported findings were serious enough for SETI to point its ears toward the star, designated HD 164595.

SOUNDBITE: SETH SHOSTAK, SENIOR ASTRONOMER AT SETI, SAYING:

‘If that signal is still there, and if it’s for real, then we have a good chance of finding it.’

Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at SETI, said that right now his team is simply trying to replicate whatever the Russians found.

If it is the real deal, it’s a big deal.

SOUNDBITE: SETH SHOSTAK, SENIOR ASTRONOMER AT SETI, SAYING:

‘There’s somebody 95 light years away, and that’s a long way, like 600 trillion miles away, that’s a long way, who’s got a radio transmitter, so we’re not the only kids on the block. There’s something else intelligent out there.’

But that’s still a big if. Shostak wrote on SETI’s blog, ‘without confirmation of this signal, we can only say that it’s interesting.’

The signal will be discussed at an International Astronautical Congress in Mexico on September 27.

The report comes a week after NASA scientists announced the discovery of planet in the so-called ‘habitable zone’ orbiting a nearby star.
