AC/DC’s Rudd pleads guilty to threatening to kill, drug possession

As the drummer for the rock band AC/DC, Phil Rudd is used to being in the spotlight.

On Tuesday he was the centre of attention at a court house in Tauranga, New Zealand.

His lawyer said Rudd pleaded guilty to charges of threatening to kill and possession of drugs.

A second charge of threatening to kill was withdrawn.

The charges stem from Rudd’s anger over the launch of his solo career, which did not go well.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PHIL RUDD’S LAWYER, CRAIG TUCK SAYING:

“This matter was essentially just an angry phone call that resulted in the police getting a search warrant, believe it or not, for possession of cannabis, own use and a cell phone. They turned up at his home, nine police officers, a dog, media, charged him with attempting to procure murder, that was immediately dropped. Today another charge has been dropped. He’s entered a plea to the phone call, possession of cannabis, methamphetamine. No convictions have been entered and we’re off to a June date to argue about that.”

Rudd lives and owns a restaurant in Tauranga. Though he’s a member of AC/DC he is not taking part in the band’s world tour which starts next month.
