People living in a small farming community in Eastern Colorado have been warned to avoid drinking the town’s water after THC, the psychoactive agent in marijuana, was found in one of its feeder wells. Linda So reports.

Residents in the small town of Hugo, Colorado are resorting to bottled water.

This after THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, was found in one of the town’s feeder wells.

SOUNDBITE: CAPTAIN MICHAEL YOWELL, LINCOLN COUNTY SHERIFF’S COUNTY, SAYING:

“When we have a presumptive positive of THC in our public water we take that extremely serious and we’re going to investigate that until the end.”

Authorites are working with the FBI to figure out how the chemical was introduced into the system.

They’ve found evidence at one of the wells that it may have been done on purpose.

SOUNDBITE: CAPTAIN MICHAEL YOWELL, LINCOLN COUNTY SHERIFF’S COUNTY, SAYING:

“There were signs of tamper, forced entry into what would’ve been the raw water supply. “

The presence of THC was detected during a routine employee drug test.

More samples have been sent to a state lab for testing.

Until the results are definitive, the some 800 residents in Hugo have been told to avoid drinking the town’s water.

“I was in the grocery store, I was in there about 10 minutes and in that amount of time, people had rushed in and sold out of the water.”

SOUNDBITE: MAYE GENE LEE, HUGO RESIDENT, SAYING:

“This causes real concern, because if it happens in Hugo, Colorado, it can happen any place.”

Colorado allows both medical and recreational marijuana use.

But there are no legal pot dispensaries in the area around Hugo.

Officials say the lines to the contaminated well are being flushed and the town’s water should be safe to drink in several days.
