In ‘The Hollars’, actor-director John Krasinski goes for both tears and laughs.

The film is, at its heart, about aging matriarch Sally Hollar who is diagnosed with a brain tumor. She is played by Margo Martindale.

“What drew me to it was that I found that it was a very honest look at life, an honest look at a situation, a surprising and messy family and extremely funny, it’s the way you hope life is in a very tragic situation.”

Sally’s dysfunctional family comes to her aid, each bringing their own baggage. Among them is her son… John… played by Krasinski.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) John Kraskinski saying:

“She was the first call I made when I decided to direct, and to be honest, had she said no I don’t know if I would have directed the film, that’s how much i needed her. She’s

the centerpiece of the movie, she’s the centerpiece of the cast, when you get someone like Margo Martindale who’s that good, all these other actors jump on because they

want to work with her and it also adds this level of class to your movie that it didn’t have before.”

The film’s cast also includes Charlie Day, Anna Kendrick and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

“The Hollars” is the second film that Krasinski has directed although her is best known for playing Jim Halpert in NBC’s long-running sitcom, “The Office”.
