Actor William Shatner proposes pipeline to solve California drought

As Captain Kirk, he’s made countless voyages to save human and alien kind.

But now William Shatner’s mission is a lot closer to home.

The Star Trek legend has waded into arguments about drought in California – a problem he think he can solve.

Shatner is looking to marshal a crew for a project to bring water down from Seattle.

But at a cost of $30 billion dollars, experts say it could just be a pipedream.

SOUNDBITE: University Of Southern California Assistant Professor, Kelly Sanders, saying (English):

“There’s a difference in the amount that we’re willing to pay for water and why is that important? Well, it becomes hard to make this economical that you would recoup the cost of building such a pipeline.”

Shatner had told a Yahoo! Tech journalist he was going to start a crowdfunding campaign to pay for the project.

But it’s not just the eye watering cost that could be the problem.

SOUNDBITE: University Of Southern California Assistant Professor, Kelly Sanders, saying (English):

“I think that we need to become more efficient with the way that we use water. So, it’s not so much that we’re having a crisis that we don’t have any water, it’s just we don’t have enough water to use it for all of the purposes that we want to use it for.”

Shatner has admitted he might not be able to raise all the money.

But he hopes it will at least raise awareness about California’s water needs.
