Tens of thousands of Armenians marched through the center of the capital Yerevan late on Friday (April 24) in a torch-lit march commemorating victims of the 1915 killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

The march started at the capital’s central Republic Square, where participants set a large Turkish flag on fire at the head of the procession, met with cheers and whistling from onlookers gathered around.

Shoghesh, a young woman taking part in the procession by holding up a lit torchlight, said many in the Armenian diaspora had a right to claim land in Turkey.

“We are taking the lights to Nakaberd (Tsitsenakaberd), to the memorial of the Armenian genocide. And we demand (back) our home in western Armenia.”

Protesters also carried a giant Armenian flag through the streets to mark a century since the killings of 1.5 million Armenians during the first World War.

Crowds taking part in the march walked with torches, candles and a large Armenian flag, heading to the hilltop memorial, shouting: “Long live Armenia.”
