Astronauts celebrate early Thanksgiving with freeze dried turkey

STORY: NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren reflected on Thanksgiving over a meal of freeze-dried turkey at the International Space Station, in a video released on Monday (November 23).

“We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be up here on the International Space Station, working and living in the amazing orbiting laboratory, a physical manifestation of what is possible when the great countries of the world work together with communication, cooperation and collaboration toward peaceful means,” Kjell Lindgren said.

Expedition 45 Commander Kelly said he and Lindgren plan to spend the day watching football and eating turkey.

Kelly added that he was thankful to live in the United States and reflected on his own journey to space.

“For me being a middle-class kid from New Jersey to just have the privilege to come up here just represent my country like this. This is what I am thankful for on this Thanksgiving.” Kelly said.

The two astronauts then offered a glimpse at what passes for a Thanksgiving feast on the International Space Station — freeze dried pouches of food stapled to a plastic board.

Kelly is into his ninth month of his year-long mission, while Lindgren is set to return to Earth on December 11.
