Rishikesh, Oct 31 (ANI): A band of musicians from Austria performed on the banks of river Ganges in Rishikesh city of Uttarakhand to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Clean Ganga’ campaign. The event took place before the daily ceremonial prayer or ‘aarti’ of the river Ganges at Parmarth Niketan, a hermitage in Rishikesh. The Austrian musicians also brought water from Europe’s longest river Danube, which would be poured into river Ganges as a symbolic merging of the two rivers. Hindus bathe in the Ganges in an act of ritual purification, yet the 2,500 kilometre (1,600 mile) river stretching from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal is full of industrial effluent and untreated sewage, its banks strewn with garbage.
