STORY: Villagers and forest officials in India’s southern Kerala state came to the rescue of a two-year-old elephant calf trapped inside an unused well in the forests and successfully pulled it out.

The calf fell into the well while roaming with its mother and rest of the herd. The villagers became alert when the elephant herd made trumpeting sound near the trapped calf in Kuttampuzha Forest Range.

Rescuers used an earth mover to dig a path to the well and rope to help the calf climb its way out.

As soon it was pulled out, the calf ran towards the forest, destroying several mud walls and crops on its way.

Forest officials said the calf did not suffer any injury in the process.
