Belgians mourn bombing victims at makeshift memorial

Crowds of mourners gather at a makeshift memorial outside the city’s stock exchange on Saturday (March 26) to mourn the victims of Tuesday’s attacks.

At least 31 people were killed and 316 wounded after two bombs exploded at Brussels Airport and one at Maelbeek metro station between the city center and the European Union headquarters.

Belgium on Thursday lowered its security alert level one notch to three from the highest level, four, but security forces were still seen patrolling the streets of the Belgian capital.

After the attacks, a floral tribute almost instantly appeared in Brussels’ main square where mourners have been coming to remember the victims.

Najim Laachraoui, 25, a Belgian citizen, was one of the suicide bombers at Brussels’ Zaventem airport, investigators confirmed on Friday.

Prosecutors said Laachraoui’s DNA had been found on two explosive belts used by the Paris attackers. He left Brussels for Syria in February 2013 and broke off contact with his family.

Traveling under the false name of Soufiane Kayal, he was crossing from Hungary into Austria in September in a car driven by Salah Abdeslam, the prime suspect in the Paris attacks who was captured in Brussels last Friday.
