Eyes are on Real Madrid as rumours of a rift between Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Benitez are downplayed by the club ahead of the side’s Champions League tie against Shakhtar Donetsk.

“No, it’s not true. Cristiano (Ronaldo) is a very hardworking player, and he is a main player in the team, that’s why we have no problems.”

“Well, first of all I feel bad if we lose. Of course I take everything about Real Madrid personally, especially if we lose at home and against Barcelona. But as long as I have no influence over any critical statements against me, everything I can do is to concentrate myself on my work, and do well things which I can do well.”

STORY: Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez is “absolutely confident” his players, including striker Cristiano Ronaldo, are behind him following Saturday’s (November 21) 4-0 defeat by arch-rivals Barcelona in La Liga’s ‘Clasico’.

Under-pressure Benitez thanked Real’s president Florentino Perez for his vote of confidence on Monday (November 23), and told a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s (November 25) Champions League Group A game against Shakhtar Donetsk there are “no conflicts” with Ronaldo.

The 55-year-old dismissed reports the Portuguese, the Spanish club’s record goalscorer, was unhappy playing under him.

“No, it’s not true. Cristiano (Ronaldo) is a very hardworking player, and he is a main player in the team, that’s why we have no problems.”

Benitez succeeded Carlo Ancelotti in June but Real have stuttered during the early days of his tenure and have lost their last two matches to sit third in La Liga, six points behind leaders Barcelona and two behind Atletico Madrid.
