Bird flu-hit Manipur begins culling of poultry livestock

Imphal, April 21 (ANI): Veterinary department of Manipur culled and buried poultry livestock following an outbreak of bird flu or Avian Influenza. The government confirmed the outbreak of flu and said some poultry birds in capital Imphal had shown symptoms. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has set up several teams to monitor the developments. Veterinary doctor N. Rajendra Singh of ICAR said all poultry birds within 10 kilometres of the infected zone would be culled and buried and the fowl owners shall be adequately compensated. The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal has confirmed the outbreak at the poultry unit of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in Imphal. The government has banned the movement of birds and poultry products and urged people not to enter poultry farms.
