This devastating scene in Kathmandu is repeated again and again as recovery teams pull bodies from the debris.

Much of this city has been reduced to rubble after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday, with aftershocks continuing through Monday.

More than 3200 people were killed and that number is likely to go up as recovery teams reach remote parts of the country.

Overwhelmed authorities are trying to cope with shortages of drinking water and food, as well as the threat of infectious diseases.

And high in the Himalayas, the earthquake triggered a huge avalanche that killed 17 people.

Michael Churton was at the Mt. Everest base camp and although he suffered what appears to be heavy bruises, he was amongst the lucky who came out alive.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER MICHAEL CHURTON, WHO SURVIVED EARTHQUAKE AND VALANCE ON MT. EVEREST, SAYING:

“Everything was gone. All our tents were gone, and then like people were pushed. Like the guy who stood in front of me was now 30 feet over there. And we’re missing one person that we don’t know if she’s alive or dead.”

Authorities say this is the single worst disaster to hit the world’s highest mountain.
