Boy pulled out alive from Nepal quake rubble

A teenage boy in Kathmandu is found alive, five days after a devastating earthquake struck Nepal.

Pema Lama was trapped under the collapsed rubble of a hotel.

Officials say his motorcycle saved him from getting crushed.

There were joyous celebrations for the rescuers who found him.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LEADER OF RESCUE OPERATION FROM NEPALI ARMED POLICE FORCE, D. B. KUNWAR, SAYING:

“This is the first time ever that we have ever rescued a live person after 144 hours. I think this is exceptional case around the world where a live person has been rescued from a collapsed structure. Thank you so much.”

Lama’s rescue offers a rare glimpse of hope, after officials had said there’s little chance of finding anyone alive.

Saturday’s earthquake has killed more than 5,000 people.

Thousands of houses have been destroyed and the UN says at least two million are in need of food and shelter.
