A Belgian brewery inaugurates a pipeline buried beneath the medieval city of Bruges to transport its beer to a bottling plant some 3 km away. David Pollard reports.

A Belgian brewery has gone underground to solve a workflow issue – piping its beer to the bottling plant

This was the scene several times a day at the Half Moon brewery in medieval Bruges.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HALVE MAAN BREWERY MANAGING DIRECTOR, XAVIER VANNESTE, SAYING:

“We have up to four to five of these tanker trucks a day sometimes and that’s really becoming difficult for environmental reasons but also, just in general, the liveability of the inner centre of Bruges is sometimes threatened (by) that.”

They’ve been brewing here for nearly 600 years – so didn’t want to relocate out of town

A Eureka moment solving their traffic problem …

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HALVE MAAN BREWERY MANAGING DIRECTOR, XAVIER VANNESTE, SAYING:

“Actually I was seeing some construction workers who were building other pipelines for utilities, drinking water or cables — and as I was speaking with these guys, I was realising that, in fact, building a beer pipeline would be feasible and was actually something that was not just a dream but that (it) would be possible.”

Crowdfunding raising ten percent of the cost – paying investors in beer – a bottle a day for life for 7500 euros.

A bottle whose contents have not seen the inside of a tanker – or helped create congestion

So when traffic is clogging up your city centre – for once it seems alcohol is a solution after all
