“You know when it was Redbull that won the championship for so many years it didn’t feel the same because you still had other people winning races, you know McLaren was there, we won four races, five races every year against them so there was competition for Redbull but now there’s no competition for Mercedes, so it’s a shame but it’s not Mercedes’ fault. They are just doing a better job than anyone else so it’s our fault for not doing a good enough job. I’m happy there’s regulation changes for the future and hopefully it’ll bring people closer together the teams, because when you see a race like Barcelona, when both Mercedes crashed at the start, it was a great race because you had two teams fighting for the victory: Ferrari and Redbull, and I think people love that you know other teams that are involved in winning. Even if it’s two guys that are fighting for the championship, if they are from different teams it makes such a difference. Formula One needs that I mean there are so many good fights behind Mercedes, the rest of Formula One, there are so many good races but those two (Hamilton and Rosberg) it’s just too easy for them.”

STORY: McLaren driver Jenson Button say Mercedes’ domination of Formula 1 has changed the sport.

The British driver for the McLaren team is taking next year off but hopes to return to the F1 grid in 2018.

Mercedes have completely dominated this year’s races, with either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg winning all but one of the 14 races so far, and Button feels it is not good for the sport.

Speaking on Wednesday (September 14) ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, the 2009 world champion for the Brawn team, said:

“When it was Redbull that won the championship for so many years it didn’t feel the same because you still had other people winning races.

Hamilton (250 points) has a slender lead over Rosberg (248) going into the Singapore Grand Prix with the nearest driver to the Mercedes pairing being Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo on 161.

Button is currently 15th in the driver standings with just 17 points with team mate Fernando Alonso 11th on 30 points.
