Milan is banning private cars for three days this week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Some welcome the relief.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) LOCAL RESIDENT, GERMANO, SAYING:

“I can feel the pollution. I’m lucky to be able to go to the seaside because I have a small house there and I must say that the difference is notable.”

Others are learning to adapt.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) LOCAL RESIDENT PAOLA SAYING:

“I normally move around by car but today we’ve used the public transport. It’s a new experience.”

With ambient pollution detectors in both Milan and Rome registering high levels of dangerous micro particles — it’s been a boon for public transport.

It’s also encouraging others to get where they want under their own steam.
