CCTV captures archway collapsing as quake hits Kathmandu

STORY: Footage from Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) released by Nepalese police showed the moment a large archway collapsed over a bustling street in Kathmandu as an earthquake hit Nepal on Saturday killing nearly 6,000 people.

The first tremors were captured by the shuddering camera on Kanti Path Road as people tried to flee. Moments later, an archway located on the side of the road near the city’s shopping mall collapsed to the ground releasing a large cloud of smoke.

Towards the end of the of the video a person is seen being dragged out of the rubble while others scramble through the debris.

Many Nepalis have been sleeping in the open since Saturday’s quake. According to the United Nations, 600,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.

It said eight million people have been affected, with at least two million in need of tents, water, food and medicines over the next three months.

An official from Nepal’s home ministry said on Thursday (April 30) that the number of confirmed deaths from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake had risen to 5,858 by Thursday afternoon, and almost 13,800 were injured.
