It was a dramatic change from Monday’s riots in Baltimore….

The National Guard and a heavy police presence couldn’t diminish emotions, as residents reacted to the city’s chief prosecutor charging six Baltimore police officers in the death of Freddie Gray. One was charged with murder.

“The manner of death, deemed a homicide by the Maryland State Medical Examiner, is believed to be the result of a fatal injury that occurred while Mr. Gray was unrestrained in by a seatbelt in the custody the Baltimore Police Department wagon.”

She said the officers failed to give Gray the medical attention he asked for, and that his arrest was unlawful.

Baltimore’s mayor said five of the six officers were under arrest… music to the ears of those who have called for justice since Gray’s death.

But lawyer for the Baltimore police union, Michael Davey, says the officers are innocent:

“These officers did nothing wrong.”

With police conduct toward minority groups now a national issue, President Obama says it is “absolutely vital” the truth comes out:

“All the evidence needs to be presented.”

Despite the charges offering some relief to demonstrators, protests are scheduled to continue throughout the weekend.
