The sudden eruption occurred around 6 p.m. local time.

Residents reported a sulfur smell and heavy smoke, hampering visibility.

Authorities say flights to the city of Puerto Montt have been canceled.

Chile has the second largest chain of volcanoes in the world after Indonesia —

Numbering 2,000 — with 90 considered active.

The Calbuco volcano saw its last major eruption in 1961.
