3. (SOUNDBITE)(English) ENGLAND CAPTAIN ALASTAIR COOK SAYING:
“We enjoy playing with the balance of this side and it gives Chris another opportunity as a player, to play for England. I don’t quite think we have seen the best of him yet in an England shirt. But he is obviously in fine form for Warwickshire, nine for an 100 in the last two weeks so yeah. Sometimes, we know that Ben obviously balances our side really well but he, like anyone, could get injured so we obviously need the competition in those all rounders places.”
STORY: England captain Alastair Cook told reporters on Thursday (May 26) that all-rounder Chris Woakes will replace Ben Stokes for the second Test against Sri Lanka which begins on Friday (May 27).
Cook said that Woakes would bat at number eight and Mooen Ali and Jonny Bairstow move up the order.
Stokes is out with knee surgery after the innings and 88 run victory in the first Test at Headingley.
Wet conditions met the players at the Riverside ground in Chester-Le-Street but the weather is predicted to improve for the first day of play.
Sri Lanka will name their players later after discussions and an examination of the wicket.
“Hopefully we can get a little bit of sunshine and the wicket will get better, ” Matthews said.
