There is a festive mood at Brussels’ Christmas market despite security measures, a month after authorities had put the Belgian capital on maximum alert during a manhunt for the Paris attackers. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air in Brussels

Residents and tourists out in the city’s historical center — carrying out last minute Christmas shopping.

A month after authorities put the capital on maximum alert — it’s still the Christmas season.

They are enjoying holiday cheer — just weeks after the city was all but shut down amid a manhunt for attackers.

Security is still out on the streets.

But residents say it won’t dampen the holiday spirit.

(SOUNDBITE) (Dutch) AIRPORT CUSTOMER SERVICE OFFICER WORKING IN SWEDEN, TIFFANY SURDIACOURT, SAYING:

“The coziness of Christmas is much bigger than my fear of terror.”

It’s a feeling Belgium’s King Phillipe encourages in his traditional Christmas Address.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) KING OF BELGIUM, PHILIPPE, SAYING:

“Ladies and Gentlemen. In order to defend our society, it is important not to let anyone intimidate us nor divide us. This is what our attackers are looking for.

And in many ways it looks like any other Christmas — the city’s signature statue is adorned in seasonal fare — delighting residents and tourists. — even as troops on the street are part of the holiday season.
