Holiday storms cut a path of death and destruction across the U.S., over the weekend, killing scores and leaving many people homeless. Diane Hodges reports.

Hundreds of residents in the Dallas area are thankful they survived a weekend of devastating tornadoes.


“I just stayed in my closest all night long, shaking like a leaf on a tree.”i

While this woman was able to leave her refuge when the storm passed, others weren’t so lucky.

At least 11 people were killed by the tornadoes, which packed winds of up to 200 miles per hour.

They were part of a series of storms that hit the south during the holidays, claiming a total of 43 lives, leaving many at a loss for words.


“This should be a joyous holiday season (he chokes up) and it will not be for many.”

But others were grateful the destruction wasn’t even worse.

“Compared to our neighbors, I think we got pretty lucky, the house is still standing, the walls are standing.”

In New Mexico, storms dumped more than 12 inches of snow on the city of Roswell, setting a new one-day record.

Officials declared a state of emergency for all of New Mexico and closed parts of Interstate 40, just as many holiday travelers were trying to return home.

And some who tried to fly also found their way blocked — 1,500 flights were canceled on Sunday due to bad weather.

And more storms are expected today.
