Conjoined twins in Peru to be separated

These baby girls in Peru were born joined at the abdomen, but doctors say they will soon perform surgery to separate the two.

So far, they’re healthy. They were born at 35 weeks and each weigh about five pounds.

The twins share a liver and doctors say more tests need to be done to determine what other organs they may be sharing.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) NEONATOLOGIST, JORGE LUIS TAPIA, SAYING:

“We’ll have to see what percentage of the liver each has, because there was a pre-natal sonogram that showed they were sharing the same liver. But we don’t know if they are sharing the pancreas or other organs. So that all has to be established with sophisticated tests, such as through a CT-angiogram in which you see the blood vessel ls to figure out how to separate the two and to see how complex this situation is.”

The girls will be transferred to a hospital in Lima for the operation.
