Countdown appears to start for execution of foreigners in Indonesia

Seven out of ten foreign national convicts in Indonesia have been given a 72-hour notice of their execution, according to the lawyer for a Nigerian among the group.

The news comes as foreign embassy officials arrive at the maximum security prison, where the executions will be held.

They were summoned by the Indonesian government.

The group of convicted drug offenders are set to face the firing squad and include nationals from Australia, Brazil, Ghana, Nigeria and the Philippines.

The family of a Filipina woman, Mary Jane Veloso, also arrived Saturday.

Their lawyer says he’s requested a second judicial review.

“She had in her possession the subject substance without her knowledge, without her consent, without any intention to transit, to buy, to sell or to use.”

As the foreign officials headed to the prison, one dignitary was not among them.

Supporters of French national Serge Atlaoui were celebrating in Paris after hearing news that he received temporary reprieve.

“Mister Atlaoui thought he would make his bag last night and go with his unfortunate friends. He prepared his bag, but then learned that in fact his name was not on the list of those who were going to be executed.”

It was not immediately clear why his death sentence was postponed.
