Country celebrates guru nanak’s birthday
Punjab, Nov 17: Sikhs across the country and the globe celebrated the 548th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak on 14th November, the most sacred festival of Sikhs. They marked the event by visiting their gurudwaras to offer prayers. Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of the Sikh faith, was born in Nankanasahib in present day Pakistan. However, the largest population of Sikh community lives in India. A night before or early in the morning, a Guru Purab “Nagarkirtan” is organised by followers of the faith to spread the message of the Guru Gobind. The festival begins with an “Akhand Path ” a day before Guru Purab and non-stop reiterations of verses from Guru Granth Sahib , the most sacred book of the Sikh religion for 48 hours. On the day of the festival, people sing devotional hymns and set out for Prabhat Pheris. Following this, a Katha session is done where the teachings of the Sikh gurus are read out. Everybody is joyful and happiness is disseminated on the occasion.
