The cold weather did not stop shoppers from hitting the stores on London’s iconic Oxford Street on Saturday for the annual Boxing Day sales.

Foreign and local shoppers strolled along Oxford Street, ready to snap up the best bargains, but some were unable to enter the city’s large department stores due to the crowds.

“You have to get up so early, like 6 o’clock in the morning, and you can find the queues there in front of Selfridges and we couldn’t get in — yet,” one man said.

But not all shoppers embraced the much awaited sales.

“All the clearing stock is there, so if you ask me frankly speaking I don’t think it’s worth it,” said an unidentified shopper who arrived at Oxford Street at 5 in the morning with his wife.

Many large retailers launch sales offering big discounts on Boxing Day to try to entice domestic and foreign consumers to engage in a second wave of buying after Christmas.

Local media reported that retailers are expecting a taking of up to 3.74 billion pounds ($5.49 billion) welcoming an estimated 22 million shoppers across Britain.
