A Cuban train en route to cross the island derailed shortly after midnight on Thursday, injuring dozens of passengers. Nathan Frandino reports.
Cuban train derails, injuring passengers
Officials say the train derailed just after midnight, when the bridge it was traveling over collapsed here in Havana’s Guanabacoa municipality.
The accident injured some 45 passengers, all of whom were taken to a local hospital.
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED CUBAN MAN INJURED IN TRAIN DERAILMENT, SAYING:
“I was standing and I felt an impact. I hit the wall of the train and, when I got up, we helped carry out the injured.”
The accident caught the train staff by surprise.
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED TRAIN STEWARDESS, SAYING:
“We have had other accidents but not of this magnitude that we had to go to a hospital or anything like that.”
Famously slow, Cuba’s railroad is in disrepair and needs both updating and maintenance.
