Cyclone Stan churns toward Australia’s northwest coast
A tropical cyclone gathered strength as it headed for the northwest coast of Western Australia on Saturday.
Cyclone Stan is forecast to intensify as it crosses the region, home to the world’s largest iron ore export hub.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has issued yellow alerts for coastal and inland communities, urging residents to move into shelters.
Some plan to sit the storm out at home.

“We’re very busy at work today tying everything down and since then we’ve come home and secured everything. I’m going to put the truck in the shed and then that’ll do us, I think, we’ll just buckle down and sit it out.”
The bureau is also warning of a dangerous storm tide with “damaging waves and dangerous flooding”.
This is the first cyclone of the season which runs from November to April.
