Deal reached to allow Cubans passage to US

Central American officials have reached a deal that could help Cuban migrants like these who are currently stranded at the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

For months thousands of migrants have been stranded here and elsewhere in Central America, blocked from continuing their land journey to the U.S.

But leaders from Central American countries reached an agreement Monday to provide flights for an undisclosed number of Cubans to El Salvador, where they will then be bussed to Mexico.

The leaders said the program will be subject to revision

The flow of Cuban migrants has surged recently as many fear the preferential treatment of Cubans entering the U.S. will be discontinued since relations between Cuba and the U.S. have thawed.

Under Cold War arrangements, Cubans who set foot on U.S. soil are allowed to stay. While those captured at sea are sent back.
