Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Oct 11 (ANI): Ahead of the gleaming festival of Diwali, potters in Uttar Pradesh are busy preparing earthen lamps. Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, is just around the corner and demand for the article goes up during this time of the year. In holy city of Varanasi, potters are making more than 1,000 lamps in a day to meet the surge in demand. These potters otherwise make clay utensils. However, the demand of clay lamps or diyas has been steadily decreasing over the years with the advent of cheap and decorative LED lights in the markets. The ages old festival of Diwali marks the homecoming of Hindu god, Lord Rama, after an exile of 14 years. On this day, people illuminate their houses with different types of lamps and lights. Fireworks displays and exchange of gifts and sweets with friends and family are an integral part of the festival celebration.
