ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley launched his 2016 presidential campaign on Saturday (May 30), positioning himself as an alternative to front-runner Hillary Clinton.

“Today, to you and to all who can hear my voice, I declare that I am a candidate for President of the United States and I am running for you,” O’Malley told a crowd of supporters in Baltimore.

O’Malley, who has aggressively courted the Democratic party’s liberal wing, becomes the latest Democrat to join the pack challenging Clinton, telling the crowd in Baltimore that the American dream needs “rebuilding”.

Liberal U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont launched a long-shot bid for president in late April.

Former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee is set to also join the race for the 2016 Democratic nomination for president on Wednesday (June 3), Politico reported on Friday (May 29), citing an unnamed source with knowledge of his plans.

Clinton, the former U.S. secretary of state, is widely seen as the favorite for the party’s nomination, but she has come under criticism for using a personal email account, hosted on a private server in her New York state home, instead of a government one for messages she sent and received as secretary of state.
