At least six people have been killed and thousands evacuated in dozens of wildfires that continue to sweep across the west. Linda So reports.

For firefighters across the west, there’s no relief in sight as the fiery summer continues.

Dozens of wildfires have blackened more than 500,000 acres from California to Washington state, and many are still burning.

SOUNDBITE: JEFF HERMES, FIRE VICTIM, SAYING:

“I’ve never, ever thought I would be around a fire like this.”

Jeff Hermes lost his home in the raging Chimney Fire in California’s San Luis Obispo County.

That fire has destroyed dozens of homes and continues to threaten thousands more.

The historic Hearst Castle, a major tourist attraction on California’s central coast has been shutdown to the public as a safety precaution.

SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED TOURIST, SAYING:

“It’s pretty scary, it’s devastation, we won’t be able to see what we came here for, but it’s still beautiful country.”

In Idaho, firefighters are battling a stubborn wildfire that continues to burn largely out of control.

The so-called Henry’s Creek Fire has scorched 43,000 acres.
