Drone video reveals the disaster of Amatrice

Aerial footage released on Friday (August 26) showed the extent of damage in the central Italian town of Amatrice after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake ripped through the area earlier in the week.

The number of people killed in the quake rose to 267 on Friday as rescue workers pulled more bodies from mounds of debris and families prepared to hold the first funerals.

Some 928 aftershocks have hit the area around Amatrice and the nearby towns of Pescara del Tronto, Arquata del Tronto and Accumoli in the wake of Wednesday’s quake. Nearly 60 of them struck since midnight.

On Thursday afternoon, a violent aftershock measuring magnitude 4.3 sent rescuers fleeing from debris and stones that fell from the severely damaged bell tower of the 15th century church of St. Augustine in Amatrice.

The aftershock struck fear and panic in survivors and detached the church’s facade, leaving it dangerously unstable over the main street where rescuers work.

Hardly a single building was left unscathed in Amatrice. It was last year voted one of the most beautiful old towns in Italy and is famous for its local cuisine.

Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said Amatrice will have to be “razed to the ground”.
