“The body is broken that’s for sure but my mind is good. I’m happy and satisfied and as far as what it means to me, I chose to do this and I choose to set these goals for myself so the fact that I accomplish them is, I guess you say you become proud of yourself when you say, I’m going to do this and then you do it.”

STORY: American Ashton Eaton said on Friday (August 19) that his body was broken, the day after he won his second straight Olympic decathlon gold medal, extending his reign in a sport whose champion earns the title of the world’s greatest athlete.

“The body is broken that’s for sure but my mind is good. I’m happy and satisfied,” he told Reuters TV in an interview on Friday in Rio de Janeiro.

“As far as what it means to me, I chose to do this and I choose to set these goals for myself so the fact that I accomplish them is, I guess you say you become proud of yourself when you say, I’m going to do this and then you do it,” said Eaton, who is now struggling with a cold.

Eaton edged France’s Kevin Mayer, who had threatened his position with strong showings in the pole vault and javelin throw, into the silver medal position.

Eaton’s performance however fell short of the world record he set last year in Beijing, much to his disappointment.

The twice world champion became just the third man to win the Olympic decathlon twice, a feat last achieved by Briton Daley Thompson at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Eaton won two of the 10 events – the long jump and 400m – and finished second to Warner in the 100m and 110m hurdles.

His final score of 8,893 points tied the Olympic record set in 2004 by Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic.
