Eleven held in South Africa crackdown on anti-foreigner violence

The arrests happened during a nighttime joint raid between the police and army.

Local TV news showed South African authorities entering this Johannesburg hostel, and arresting men suspected of involvement in recent anti-immigration violence that’s left at least seven people dead.

Last week, hundreds of angry hostel residents had threatened to continue their violence against foreigners, and on Tuesday government soldiers were sent into Johannesburg, as well as to the coastal town of Durban, where the violence started three weeks ago, to stem the unrest.

Angry South African mobs have been looting local businesses owned by foreign nationals, blaming the immigrants for their own joblessness and the country’s glaring income disparities.

Periodic outbursts of violence against foreigners have occurred in South Africa, but the recent unrest was some of the worst in several years.
