STORY: Three Indian workers, who were allegedly tortured by their Saudi Arabian employer, returned to their native place in southern state of Kerala on Saturday (December 26).

The incident came to light when they shared a video on a social networking site that allegedly showed their employer chasing and beating them with a wooden club. After the video became public, the Indian government intervened and brought the workers back.

There was emotional reunion at Thiruvnthanpuram airport as the three men — identified as Abhishek, Vimal and Baiju — landed and were met with their relatives.

Baiju narrated the ordeal to the waiting reporters.

“We were spit on our face and slapped. If we didn’t follow the orders, we were hit.” he said.

The trio were reportedly promised jobs as electricians in Yemen by an employment agent. Instead, they were taken to Saudi Arabia and were allegedly forced to work in a brick manufacturing company.

Many Indians, especially from southern states, go to the Middle-East with the hope of securing jobs with the help of middlemen.

“Nothing is certain about my life now. I have a debt of nearly 700,000 rupees ($10590.03). I had gone there with a lot of hopes,” Vimal told reporters.

Additional details of the alleged harassment and a response from the employer where not immediately available.
