One by one, the coffins are laid out on a marquee.

Twenty-eight of them.

A state funeral in the central Italian town of Amatrice for some of the nearly 300 people killed in last week’s devastating earthquake.

Entire towns were leveled in the quake.

Locals mourn the loss of loved ones, but also, the loss of their community.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) AMATRICE RESIDENT, RICCARDO DI CARMINE, SAYING:

“We are from the same town, we all know each other. The thing that connects all of us is the love of the land.”

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) RIETI RESIDENT, STELLA VINCENZI, SAYING:

“My husband is a school caretaker. I am sure lots of people, lots of teachers, lots of children that we knew are here. It just isn’t right, it hurts too much.”

Most of the 231 people who died in Amatrice were visitors.

So even as this tiny Italian community says goodbye to its lost souls, other cities are preparing their own funerals for when victims are returned to their hometowns.
