Evacuees from besieged Daraya arrive in rebel-held Hama

Syrian rebel fighters and their families from Daraya celebrate newfound safety in rebel-held Hama.

They’re here under an evacuation deal that’s allowed them to flee the besieged city and receive medical treatment.

This field commander from the Ahrar al Sham rebel group says their welcoming in the city was a sign.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) HUSAM SALAMEH, FIELD COMMANDER WITH AHRAR AL SHAM REBEL GROUP, SAYING:

“These images may seem like they represent failure and defeat to some, but the truth is, this is one form of perseverance, this shows the weakness of the regime and its allies.”

Conditions in Daraya had been so bad that many people resorted to eating grass and begging.

The city was among the first places to see peaceful protests five years ago, but now – like many other cities in Syria – is another victim in the country’s bloody war.
