Ex-Thai PM in court for negligence trial

ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION

Ousted Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra greeted supporters as she arrived at the Supreme Court in Bangkok on Tuesday (May 19) for the start of her trial on negligence charges.

She’s accused of failing to prevent corruption in a multi-billion dollar rice subsidy scheme which paid farmers twice the market rate for their crop.

“Yes, I feel confident to present and everything will be followed by due process and rule of law. Thank you,” she said as she entered court.

Yingluck was forced from office a year ago in early May 2014 after Thailand’s Constitutional Court found her guilty of abuse of power. Weeks later, the military staged a coup that removed the remnants of her government.

Yingluck, who denies the charges against her, faces up to 10 years in prison if she is found guilty.
