STORY: Thousands of people were fleeing Kathmandu on Monday, amid a continuous stream of tremors that have rattled the Nepalese capital following Saturday’s deadly earthquake that has claimed more than 3,700 lives.

On most major roads leaving Kathmandu, there was a crush of people wanting to get out from the city.

The capital is still being rocked by severe aftershocks from the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that wreaked havoc on the tiny Himalayan nation.

Buses and trucks leaving the city were grossly overloaded with anxious passengers keen to leave the city where rumors of another major earthquake or the outbreak of a diseases kept people on the edge.

Purnima Watta, a college girl who was leaving the capital along with fellow students, said they wanted to go home to their parents.

“This is all because of the earthquake, we are going to our homes,” she said.

When asked why was she leaving Kathmandu, she said: “We don’t feel safe.”

Overwhelmed authorities were trying to cope with a shortage of drinking water, food and electricity, as well as the threat of disease, and the government appealed for international help.

Meanwhile, the extent of Nepal’s disaster was only just emerging as reports of devastation began to come in from other parts of the country.

Rescue teams, helped by clear weather, used helicopters to airlift scores of people stranded at higher altitudes, two at a time. The United States said four of its citizens had been killed at the base camp area.
