STORY: Vincent Janssen scored a hat-trick on Sunday (January 24) as rampant AZ Alkmaar beat Feyenoord 4-2 in the Dutch Eredivisie.

The defeat leaves Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side 11 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven and all but ends any hopes Feyenoord have of challenging for the title.

Alkmaar created the first clear chance of the game in the fifth minute, at full stretch Markus Henriksen not quite managing to get good enough contact on Joris Van Overeem’s cross to turn the ball into an empty net from two metres out.

Seven minutes later Feyenoord took the lead thanks to an own goal from Ridgeciano Haps, the full back putting the ball into the net after goalkeeper Sergio Rochet had parried Karim El Ahmadi’s shot and tried to claim the rebound as Haps was attempting to clear.

The defender was involved in Alkmaar’s equaliser in the 24th minute as the home side hit back with two goals in two minutes, supplying the cross for Henriksen whose superb dummy created space for him to fire home from 12 metres.

Almost immediately Vincent Janssen put Alkmaar ahead, turning Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s cross past Kenneth Vermeer into the goal to give the home side the lead at the break.

Alkmaar started the second half as they had ended the first and increased their lead in the 53rd minute, Janssen moving the ball onto his left foot and firing a shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

The Dutch under 21 striker completed his hat-trick two minutes later, tapping into the goal after poor Feyenoord defending had gifted the ball to Dabney dos Santos in the penalty area.

Tonny Vilhena gave Feyenoord hope of salvaging something from the game in the 72nd minute with a thunderous strike from 30 metres that gave Rochet no chance as it flew past him into the top corner of the goal, however it was to be the visitors last clear opportunity as they slumped to their third defeat in a row.
