Final respects in Italy

STORY: Crowds gathered to pay their final respects to their loved ones on Saturday (August 27), after a state funeral was held for 35 people killed in an earthquake in central Italy this week.

Applause rang out as the first small white coffin exited the sports center, that of a nine-year-old girl, Giulia, one of the youngest of the victims.

Her sister, Giorgia, who turned four-years-old on Saturday, was plucked alive from the debris.

Nine more bodies were recovered Saturday from the worst hit town of Amatrice, bringing the total number of people killed in the quake to 290.

Authorities have released the names of 181 victims. The youngest was five months old; the oldest, 93.

Six Romanians, three Britons, a Spanish woman, a Canadian and an Albanian also died in the calamity.

The area is popular with vacationers and authorities are still struggling to pin down how many visitors were there when the quake hit.
