Fisherfolk in Andhra Pradesh appease ‘goddess of water’ for good catch during new season

Visakhapatnam, June 10 (ANI): Hundreds of people belonging to fishing community thronged a temple in port city Visakhapatnam on the occasion of ‘Gangamma Jatara’ and sought blessings from the ‘goddess of water’ for safe and prosperous journey for the men ahead of fishing season. Decked in traditional attire and dancing to the beat of musical instruments, fisherwomen accompanied by their family members offered prayers to the goddess for happy and safe fishing season. The festival started with prayers and later, a huge procession was taken out with artist performing traditional Koya dance on the beat of drums. President of State Mechanised Fishing Boats Operators’ Association, PC Apparao said this was a custom celebrated annually. June 15 marks the end of 61-day annual ban on fishing to allow breeding of various fishes. The festival is being celebrated since 2004. Fisherfolk believe the goddess saved them from loss of life and property when tsunami stuck several coastal areas that year.
