Introducing the all-new Taurus sedan in Shanghai.

Americans maybe snubbing the car that was once a huge hit, but Ford is hoping for another run in China – the world’s biggest car market.

“Ford is unveiling it for the first time at the Shanghai Auto Show. It redesigned this car for Chinese entrepreneurs. They’re only showing us the exterior, but I’m told the back seats will have extra legspace, recline, and even give you a massage. Made only for China.”

But how much can the made-for-China Taurus benefit from the legacy of the original American model launched in 1985?

That car was the first to round off the corners of the boxy sedans of the times and jolted Ford ahead of its rivals.

In the mid-90s it had a winning streak as the best-selling car in the U.S., but last year Taurus sales dropped over 20 percent.

“We’ve done the market research and the market research shows that there is a need for a large premium sedan here in China. China’s a very large market and there’s a need that’s unmet. And we think the Taurus is going to meet those needs.”

But as the massive offerings at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show displays, it will be a competitive race to pick up the new moneyed Chinese passengers.
