Fresh protests over Haiti poll result

Throngs of Haitians took to the streets on Thursday (November 26) to continue their protest against results from the October 25 election after official tallies were announced earlier in the week.

Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) confirmed that government-backed candidate Jovenel Moise will face Jude Celestin, the former head of Haiti’s state construction company, in a runoff vote next month.

The announcement spurred another round of protests as Haitians from various political parties marched in Port-au-Prince’s Bel Air neighbourhood.

Particularly upset are supporters of candidates Moise Jean-Charles, who has been outspoken in opposing the announced results.

Protests have become almost a daily occurrence in the Haitian capital since the October election as political parties across the board charge that the ruling party – led by outgoing president Michel Martelly – tainted the vote with massive fraud.

Martelly has said Haiti was “not where we want to be” but had made giant strides including lower inflation.

Haitians will go to the polls on December 27 for the runoff.
