Funeral for Pakistan rights activist

More than 200 family, friends and colleagues gathered to say a final farewell to human rights activist Sabeen Mahmud.

She was shot dead leaving a cafe in Karachi where she held art exhibitions and talks.

She’d just hosted a seminar on the disappearance of political campaigners in Baluchistan.

Lawmaker Farooq Sattar was among those to pay tribute.

(SOUNDBITE)(Urdu) LAWMAKER FAROOQ SATTAR SAYING:

“She was a strong and effective voice of civil society. She was unbiased and she spoke in a principled way without compromise. She would take a stance on principles. She would highlight the ordeals of the oppressed. I think her martyrdom is a great national loss.”

Mahmud was gunned down by a man on a motorbike.

Her mother, who was with her, was wounded.

Pakistan’s military says it’s asked the intelligence agencies to help track down the killer.
