A funeral is set for an American woman murdered in her Florence apartment, and Italian police arrest a Senegalese illegal immigrant in her killing, in a case that could stoke tensions in Italy over illegal immigration. Mana Rabiee reports.
Funeral set for slain American woman in Italy
Italian police say this is the man they believe killed American Ashley Olsen in her Florence apartment last weekend.
He’s been identified as Diaw Cheik Tidianee, an illegal immigrant from Senegal.
Florence chief prosecutor Giuseppe Creazzo says Tidianee met the 35-year-old Olsen in a local nightclub … that the two had consensual sex in her home under the influence of alcohol, and possibly drugs, before he killed her.
(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) GIUSEPPE CREAZZO, FLORENCE CHIEF PROSECUTOR, SAYING:
”This man was totally unknown to Italian police, he has no criminal records, he arrived in Italy a few months ago to join up with his brothers who have been in Italy for some years. We have collected very serious evidence of his guilt.”
Tidianee and his lawyers haven’t made any public comments but Italian media say he’s told police he didn’t mean to kill Olsen… that she fell during a fight.
Creazzo says Olsen was strangled but that an autopsy revealed she also had two fractures to her skull — injuries that would also have proved fatal.
Tidianee is being held in a Florence prison and faces a charge of murder, aggravated by cruelty.
The case may fuel tensions in Italy over illegal immigration in Italy which have already led to a sharp rise in support for the anti-immigrant Northern League Party.
